GameSpot Madden 12 Review

Every year at this time, fans across the country are abuzz at the prospect of their chosen team's seemingly unlimited potential. Any team could hoist the fabled Lombardi Trophy, and that unbridled optimism drenches even the most levelheaded spectators in waves of hope. It's only after the weeks creep by that fans start to realize their team hasn't improved much in the months since it last took to the field. That cycle of dizzying expectations crushed by cruel reality is mirrored all too well in Madden NFL 12.

The core action has seen slight improvements, making it incrementally better than last year's offering, and presentation tweaks do a better job of mimicking Sunday's biggest games. But those minor additions offer little incentive to plunk down your hard-earned cash if you already own a recent entry in the franchise. Madden 12 still offers the strategic excitement the series is known for, but the overall package is a familiar rendition of America's favorite sport.

The most noticeable change from Madden NFL 11 is the improved pregame presentation. Before each game begins, shaky camera close-ups give you an intimate look at your favorite players as they parade onto the field, and robotic cheerleaders who look as though they're sporting spray-on clothing dance to the delight of the frenzied crowd. The same exaggerated hoopla that an ordinary NFL contest uses to spike interest is used to ratchet up the excitement of this virtual offering, but it's ultimately a lot of frills without much payoff. The appeal fades away once you sit through the routine a handful of times, and the rest of the presentation still comes across as flat. Commentary does little to engender much enthusiasm. The duo of Gus Johnson and Cris Collinsworth returns, and they dole out the same tired cliches so often that they quickly overstay their welcome. Calls are frequently made so late that Johnson continues to hoot and holler long after a tackle occurs, which tears down the wall of believability the various pregame tricks tried to develop.

One other area of the presentation is noticeably lacking: instant replays. During the course of a game, replays are automatically cued up after big plays, just like in real life. Or, at least, that's how things should work. In reality, the plays you get to experience again appear to be randomly chosen with little regard for their overall impact. A key turnover or touchdown may be completely ignored, leaving you to wonder why this aspect of the presentation wasn't implemented in a more thoughtful manner. Even when a crucial play does automatically roll, the game fails to highlight the deciding moment. Replays are shown from a camera angle that gives the same weight to every element of the play, so a mundane handoff is just as important as a flashy spin move, and the commentators don't even chime in during such replays. Granted, you can always go to the menu and call up an instant replay yourself, but it would be nice if the game emulated real-life broadcasts more accurately. And if you're playing an online match, just give up any hope of re watching the most exciting plays. You can't manually trigger a replay until the match concludes, and by that point, it hardly matters.

Madden 12 Good but not Great

The Madden franchise is one that has managed to defy expectations year after year, and again and again come out with games that justify their annual release. It simply defies expectations, and even logic, by constantly managing to improve upon itself. Madden 12 continues that trend, although to a much, lesser degree than previous iterations. There are several technical improvements, and a few additions to the franchise mode that will appeal to the hardcore gamers, but the lack of any major changes or additions will likely scare away the casual gamer. Put simply, Madden 12 just feels a bit stale.

Don’t get me wrong, Madden 12 is a great game, but maybe the lack of competition has spoiled all of us when it comes to football games. EA Tiburon continues to refine the game, and many of the changes to this year’s title are more on the programming side. The AI is tighter, the lighting and animation are better than ever and the play controls are fluid. The biggest complaint you can level against Madden 12 is that there aren’t enough new changes. There are no new game modes, and nothing that will really blow you away. For those that haven’t played the games or haven’t purchased a Madden title in a few years, that is a non-issue. You have a great football title waiting for you. But for fans who look forward to each year’s new game, you may be disappointed.
The story

There is none, it is football. Moving on…

Actually, while there is no story, there is the franchise mode, which has seen the biggest improvements this year. Most of these improvements are made to appeal to the hardcore fans who revel in the minutia of the game, but those new to the mode should enjoy them, too.

The first change is the ability to cut players, beginning with 75 players at the start of the preseason. You then whittle your team down to those you want, and think can help you over the years. A new scouting mode also plays a part in this. Returning from previous Madden titles is the ability for players to earn tags that determine their role on the team. Some players may be listed as playoff performers, while some back benchers may earn their keep as a mentor to younger players. It won’t sell copies on its own, but it’s a good addition.

One of the more notable additions is the week-to-week tracking of players’ confidence and consistency. The top tier players will remain fairly consistent for the most part, but if you have enough bad games, they can begin to decline. After a few weeks, they will also be listed as either being hot or cold, and that will affect their play. But this addition will have a bigger impact on the up and comers and the players who are a bit more unpredictable. A QB who is just starting out can become a star with a few solid games, but if he is sacked enough or throws too many picks, it could be a tough hole to dig out of.

There is also the addition of free-agent bidding, which is aggressive and acts like a minigame. If you want a certain free agent, you will need to keep an eye on it, as others will try to match or outbid you and steal that player away.
Technical tweaks

As you would expect (and even demand), the technical side of Madden 12 is an improvement over Madden 11 — it isn’t a huge improvement, but there are a few notable changes in the lighting, reflections and the way the game looks and moves. The AI is also a bit smarter, but this probably won’t be as noticeable to people who haven’t been following the franchise year to year.

The character animations are also improved slightly, and things like the tackling animation are impressive to behold. Different players also have different reactions to plays as well, which adds a level of immersion and realism. While playing the game, the graphics are stellar, and the added details like runners kicking up grass and stains on players’ uniforms are very cool. The stadiums also look amazing, and the light and shadow effects are dead on. Where the graphics falter a bit is off field.

After taking my beloved Kansas City Chiefs to their first Super Bowl victory in longer than I want to admit, the team heads to the White House to meet President Obama. While the team looks on, running back Jamal Charles looks like he is about to vibrate and explode, while QB Matt Cassell looks as if he was lobotomized before the meeting. But when it comes to Madden, the graphics on the field are what matter, and that is where the game shines.

The online side also seems to move a bit better, and there are some additions to the team management that are nice to see — especially in the online franchises — but there isn’t much new online otherwise.
The more things change…

While there are several technical improvements in Madden 12, there are no new game modes. At all. Madden Moments return, as does the Superstar mode, but neither are significantly improved, and both modes have been done better in other games. There is a new change in Superstar that allows you to practice and build up stats in your character, something that NCAA 12 featured, but the same issues that plagued the college version plague Madden — it is too easy to increase your character’s stats. It is an instant gratification mentality, which might sound like a good idea so you can immediately get some use out of your star, but after a season or two there isn’t much more for you to strive for.

The commentary from Cris Collinsworth and Gus Johnson is also hit or miss. Sometimes it is insightful and unique to the teams. It might talk about the history of the franchise and even discuss some of the moves the team has made. Other times though, you will hear the same commentary over and over and over again. Odds are you will hear the same commentary spoken more than once in the same game.

If you haven’t played Madden in a while, then the game and its modes will be worth checking out. But for people that shelled out $60 just one year ago, the additions may not be enough to justify a new purchase of what is essentially the same thing, just with new rosters.
Conclusion

Madden 12 is a great game. Just like Madden 11 was a great game, and since they are essentially the same game on the surface, that is a bit of a problem. Maybe the pending strike had something to do with it, or maybe the recent re-negotiations effected the development. Better to believe that than think that EA Tiburon was resting on its laurels, but whatever the reason, this year’s Madden just feels too much like last year’s to get really excited over it.

For those who love the franchise, deciding on whether or not to pick up this year’s copy might be a tough call. There are improvements. The graphics on the field look great, and the lighting effects continue to amaze. The franchise mode is a bit deeper as well, which is important. But there are also no new game modes. None. That’s a hard pill to swallow for people on a budget.

That being said, Madden 12 is a quality game, and the play controls are better than ever. It is in no way a step back for the franchise, it just isn’t much of a step forward either. Maybe that means that the Madden Curse will finally be put to rest. If not, pray for poor, doomed Peyton Hillis.
Score: 8 out of 10

Madden NFL 12 EA Sports

Every year, EA Sports titles suffer the same fate: they get qualified based on value and overall change. Fans scour over reviews wondering if $60 will buy them an entirely new experience, or just a glorified roster update with a new User Interface.
Madden NFL 12 seems constantly aware of this fact. Most loading screens and introductory videos heavily champion changes made to the game, little or small. You'll enter a new section of the menu and be greeted with a video telling you just how new X, Y and Z are for this year's Madden experience. Loading screens say things like "because the fans wanted it" and "you asked for it," as if the team wanted gamers to understand that they took the feedback and criticism to heart between Madden 11 and 12.

I have to admit, I love the way EA does that. Sure, reminding me between every loading screen is a bit much, but the fact that this yearly sports operation takes feedback from fans and adds or changes designs accordingly is outstanding. One such example is the ability to trade cards in the Ultimate Team mode. You can do that this year, making it so that you don't have to rely on buying cards or luck to get what you want.

Other changes make Madden 12 feel like a new experience, as well. There's the annually touted animation updates for tackles. They're better than they've been in a long time, and gang tackles actually look realistic. In addition to the more realistic look of tackles, players will actually be able to control their ball carriers until the moment the tackles are actually happening. Rather than that cushion between runner and defender that forces an animation, Madden 12 actually waits for the tackle to start before players can no longer alter their path.
Franchise mode features our favorite update to the Madden experience. Each player will dynamically hit cold and hot streaks based on their performance. If you have a QB that completes pass after pass and converts for all sorts of yardage, you'll see him hit a hot streak and actually perform better from game to game. However, if he starts throwing interceptions, getting sacked or tossing out bad incompletions, he'll hit a cold streak. The next game he plays in, he'll be more likely to falter. The better the QB, the more consistent he is and the less affected he is by streaks. But new guys? You never know what type of player you'll be starting.
Consistency is also a player trait. All players have things like that. And traits change the way players play the game. Whether they carry the ball high or loose, or they hit hard, or whatever, it's all there. And each trait is player specific.
Ding this experience for the commentary portion, please. Madden seems to get stronger and stronger between most years. That can't be said for the voice work here. Chris Collinsworth and Gus Johnson fluctuate between sounding alright and extremely canned. And their lines repeat…constantly. Every single game I played, they told me about the same exact player with the same exact quote. That spread over two full seasons of franchise mode, regardless of the situation, made me want to die. It's stuff like that, repetition and awkward delivery that break the experience of realism.

Which is a shame, since the visual presentation aspect of this game is mostly stronger. The team decided to go with weird, slanted camera angles for off-the-field stuff, but that's really the only knock I have. 3D grass looks great (yep, 3D for the first time in Madden), jerseys look more textured and actually weather, player and ball sizing is more appropriate, stadiums are accurately represented and each team's runout style is accurately unique. On that side of the presentation coin, Madden 12 comes out a winner.

Easy Passes
Entry Location:

If you really are bad at passing, and you are always in need of an extra few points, make your receiver 7'0 in height, and make him run a fly pattern (straight run) then, providing your QB has good arm strength, and your receiver is fast, you can get a BIG play every time, but don't wait too long, even if your QB has an arm strength of 99, he will only throw it so far. Meaning, if you let the ball hang too long, it makes the receiver slow down, and allows the cornerback to catch up.

Easy Runs
Entry Location:

play in a fairly difficult level of the game, i play at all-madden difficulty, and I need to run the ball, because then it takes some of the heat off of the QB when I run a play-action. So, what you do is, set your running back up in a screen pass, and if your playbook doesn't have one, create the play, and throw it to your running back without backing up much. Yes, I do realize that there is a massive chance of the ball being tipped, intercepted, fumbled, but if you execute this correctly, you should get a good bit of yards per run.

Madden NFL 07 Hints for PC

Madden NFL 07 Hints
Confuse the Defense
Entry Location:

One of the best ways to confuse the opposing defense is to run multiple plays
out of the same formation. Use Practice mode to master every play in a given
formation to keep the defense guessing.

Quick Punt
Entry Location:

This glitch is in Pittsburgh's offensive playbook. On a 4th down with the Steelers' playbook, go to shotgun normal with 1 tight end and 3 wide recievers. Select the play "Quick Punt." When you snap the ball your quarterback will catch the ball and punt it quickly - if you run to the ball with your player you can pick it up and just start running for a touchdown. If the ball goes out of the endzone you will get a safety. This only works on a 4th down, and it only works in play now, situation, and practice mode.

Avoid Injuries
Entry Location:

If it looks like one of your players may be injured, and you're on offense, hurry up the play and they'll probably get back up.

Earn Extra money at Seasons End
Entry Location:

At the end of every season in Madden, your team will have cap penalties. If you clear the cap penalties you will earn extra money to sign rookies, free agents, etc. To do this, go to MY TEAM, the go to TEAM INFO. There you will have to press O on your controller and you will earn your cap penalties back. For example, if you have 2 million dollars and 12 million dollars in penalties, after the clear you will have 14 million dollars.

Misc. Hints
Entry Location:

HINT - Good Defensive Ends
In Madden if your looking for a better defensive line or trade bait, you can simpily change one of your linebackers who preferably has about 80 speed and about 80 strenght, to a defensive end. For example if you change DeMarus Ware ROLB, who is a 84 overall to RE or LE his rating will jump to 98.

Note: do not just change there position on the depth chart, go to roster and player managment for that player, edit his position to the new desireed position. Also you will not be able to change the players position if you dont have an excess number of players at that position,ie: you need 3 or 4 ROLB to change one of them to another position, this also works for other positions too try some out.

CHEAPER FRANCHISE MODE - If you want to save some money re-signing players wait until the off-season and the "Re-Sign Players" comes up on the schedule. During this time, you may edit the players to a different position. This lowers their overall rating while at that position. This allows you to re-sign such players to much, much cheaper deals.

You can now move these players back into their original places and their rating will go back to normal. The contracts in the game are ridiculous, so you can use this trick to make more realistic deals or just sign everyone to the minimum.

Super Star Help
Entry Location:

If you didnt import a player from NCAA '06, you may think you are out of luck, but I have a few tips for the new superstar. The most important things for a new superstar is hiring a good agent, having good parents (dna), and your appearance. Here are some tips for the following.

1. Your Parents (DNA): To get the best players, you need to have good parents. The number one thing you want is an NFL playing father. I try to get a hall of fame father or a pro bowl father. Also, you want both of your parents to have high IQ's. Without high IQ's, your awareness and other mental stats will be very low. NOTE: Make sure to read the 4 little clipped notes at the top by your perferred position. If you had an NFL playing WR, it might say that your dad couldn't catch a pass. A good position to start out with is Running Back. Most teams in the NFL need one now, and you most likely will start. (I got drafted by the Bears and I'm starting in front of Cedric Benson.)

2. Having a good agent: The best agent by far for a new super star is Danny C. By the numbers, he is pretty good. To get him, you must answer exactly like this in the interview.

Q1. What is your favorite before-the-game meal?
A. Wherever we are eating, me and my teammates are eating together.

Q2. What other position besides _____ would you like to play?
A. (any answer is acceptable)

Q3. What is the stadium you most look forward to playing in?
A. Lambeau Field. A lot of history there.

These quiz answers are not completely accurate, but for most positions you can get Danny if you answer this way.

3. Appearance: Although you might think this is pretty stupid, it is one of the key aspects to gaining stardom. A quick way to raise this attribute without getting a higher risk for injury etc., after the draft, go to the mirror and choose the revolution helmet. That raised my appearance an entire color level. There's also Eye Paint, Nasal Strips, Gloves, Tapes, Wristbands, etc. for both arms, and there is a lot more. Another tip: don't get tatoos. Some are fine, but most of them aren't. Also, don't get a crazy cut from Larry at the Barber Shop. That also turns off fans. The more popularity you recieve, there is a better chance of getting a better agent.

If your a QB in Superstar mode, and you need to get your ratings up, listen up. during the season when you go to practice, put the defense on FG block and the offense on shotgun hail mary or a route to make your WR go deep. Pass quickly before the rusah comes though. Keep doing this till your satisfied. Your ratings will go up quickly if you do this.

Good Yardage on Kick Returns
Entry Location:

Good Yardage on Kick Returns

When you are about to return a kick, go straight for the middle and let your blockers pick up as many men as possible, then when you see a decent sized hole, break off and sprint. Don't try to do too many jukes because it slows your returner down and gives the kickoff team more time to tackle you. This hint works, as i get to the 37-40 yard line every time and 1 in 7 returns go past the 50 or for a touchdown.

Madden NFL Draft Hints

Hint: Draft Pick Franchise Building

Here's a great technique if you're looking to build a dynasty longterm over many seasons. It works best with "great" teams (like the Patriots, Colts and Chargers) and "good" teams (like the Jaguars, Broncos, and Cowboys). Theoretically, though, it can work with any team.
After finishing up your pre-season games, don't advance to the regular season. Instead, head to the trading block. Offer up your first round pick and ask for a first, second and fourth round pick in return. If your team is decent enough you will receive offers from all of the bottom teams (like Buffalo, Houston, Detroit, or whoever happens to be bad that season).
So, with the bad team's first, second and fourth picks (for instance), you can offer your own second, third and fourth picks. Ask for a first, third and fourth pick in return. You have to be flexible though, because you won't always be able to get what you want in return.
If the above works, however, you'll have two first round picks, a second round pick, a third round pick, and two fourth round picks (or something similar). This is absolutely amazing when you are building a franchise. Better yet, you can do this every year, as your franchise gets stronger and stronger with young, talented players.

Madden NFL 08 Cheats for Xbox 360

Madden Cheat: Four Players On One Team
You can get four players on a team as well, not just three. To do this, begin by following the already-listed technique to get three players on a team. Then, during gameplay with all four controllers on, press start on controller three to enter the menu. Turn controllers one and two off. With the third controller, then head to the settings and to controller setup. Slide the fourth controller to the same side as the third. Then go back to the start menu, and just before resuming gameplay, turn controllers one and two back on. Changes will come into effect after the next play.

Unlockable: Hall of Fame Teams

In order to unlock the AFC/NFC Hall of Fame teams (like the Glaciers, Dummies, et cetera), you must complete the in-game Fantasy Challenge. To unlock these teams so you can play as them, you must beat them in Supreme League mode; otherwise, you will only get to play them, not as them.

Cheat: Three Players On One Team
In order to get three controllers aligned to the same team, do the following. Keep in mind that the 2nd player has to be using a wireless controller.
With all three controllers on, choose the same side with controllers one and two. During gameplay, press start on controller one and enter the menu. Turn the second controller off. Then, with the first controller, head to settings and controller setup. Slide the third controller to the same side. Go back to the start menu, and just before resuming gameplay, turn controller two back on (there should be a rumble on the second controller). Changes will come into effect after the first play. Hint: Performance Institute Exploit
To increase your chosen character's statistics faster, hence making him a superstar more rapidly, try the following exploit. On gameday (Sunday), enter the Performance Institute and complete the exercise. After exiting, head over to your team's schedule and enter. Then, exit back out to the city map, and the Performance Institute exercise will appear again for you to use. You can do this over and over again if you want.
